*THE FIRST FRIDAY*
*1992*
Mal Ali Gidado, also known as Malamijo, resides in a spacious house in Sumaila local government in Kano. His wealth is measured by numerous animals, including herds of cattle, sheep, and goats. Malamijo, a slim man with a black beard, is considered rich in the eyes of the townspeople and his family. However, his riches don't extend to marriage proposals; women and their families feast and lift their heads in anticipation of marriage, but once married, the brides face the harsh reality of maltreatment and abuse.
Despite his wealth, Malamijo is known for his frugality. He avoids spending money on clothes and wears plain attire, showcasing his disdain for extravagance. His fifteen children, spread among multiple wives, receive education, both modern and Arabic, thanks to the advice of a friend, Mal Kallamu. However, Malamijo remains resistant to altering his lifestyle, refusing to heed counsel.
Returning from a successful journey where he sold three cars of animals, Malamijo is welcomed by his children and wives. Among them is Mairama, a girl deeply affected by the family's injustices. Salame, her younger sister, attempts to console her, but Mairama reveals the harsh reality of their existence. As daughters of less privileged wives, they face discrimination within the household. Salame suggests seeking refuge with their aunt, but Mairama's response is filled with despair.
In another room, Hajjo, currently the favored wife, chastises Salame and Mairama for not greeting Malamijo properly upon his return. The sisters, with trembling spirits, prepare to face their father.
The scene depicts the complex dynamics within Malamijo's household, shedding light on the struggles faced by his wives and children.
